What is Broadband?

Generally, Broadband is referred to High Speed Internet connections over fiber optic cables rather than telephone lines. The generally accepted standard speed is 256k against dial up which is 56k. The availability of wide band of frequencies allows more information to be transmitted in a given amount of time.

This can be understood same as a narrow lane allows only one car to pass at a time while a broad lane can allow 6 cars to pass at a time.

       A few definitions of broadband connection:
  • Newton's Telecom Dictionary: "...greater than a voice grade line of 3 KHz...Some say [it should be at least] 20 KHz."
  • Jupiter Communications: at least 256 Kbps.
  • IBM Dictionary of Computing: A broadband channel is "6 MHz wide."
Why does the Internet speed slow down at specific times of the day or night?

In 99% of the cases, the slower speed during peak hours is due to congestion, i.e. large number of people sharing same network are online at once. But rarely it can also be due to temperature effecting equipment.

In simple term, you may often face a slow traffic situation while travelling to your office because of the maximum number of cars coming out on the road at the same time.

 Now since most people are not savvy in the ISP business, the blame for this normally gets put on your ISP over selling bandwidth, but this isn't always the case.
Most ISPs, particularly wireless ISPs are actually just providing you access to the Internet via a much larger company with fiber lines running all over the country or even the entire world. In the case of wireless providers, we are actually providing you with what is called "last mile" service via wireless medium. We have little or nothing to do with the operations of the Internet itself. That means that we, and you, are at the mercy of our upstream providers ability to manage their network. And since the Internet is actually many networks connected together, the congestion can exist anywhere in the world, not just on your local provider's network.

What is Only FastNet’s range of coverage?

The optimum service distance from the nearest tower/base station will be in the 5 mile radius.

What if the location is beyond 5 mile radius?

A site survey will be undertaken by Only FastNet Network Engineers to determine if your premise falls within Only FastNet’s coverage area.

After I order, how long does it take to get connected?

In most of the cases you are connected within a week’s time. However, the duration may be longer due to high volume of orders or your unavailability during the day time.

The process of getting connected is as easier as 1, 2 3:

  • A customer support team will contact you within a week to set up an appointment with you. Based on your appointment, we will send our field tech to survey the site where the equipment will be installed.
  •  The actual installation of equipment will take place within a week of a favorable site survey.
  • You will be called to set up an appointment to program and connect the equipment inside your home within 48 hours of external installation.

What should be our installation preparedness?

You should be ready to provide the clear instruction to the installer regarding:

  • The place where to install the outside equipment
  • The place where to drill through an exterior wall to run the wire from outside to inside nearest the computer or router.

What is a router?
A router is a piece of equipment that routes data (files/text/images etc.) from one system to another when those systems are connected to different physical or logical networks.
A wireless router, also referred to as an access point in the consumer world, is the equipment that is necessary for your laptop or other computer to communicate wirelessly with the other systems at your location. Today's consumer, wireless routers normally include a special port on them designed specifically to connect to the Internet.

Do we need to use a wireless router?

Only when you want to access internet on your Laptop or Desktop from multiple locations. But simply having wireless router will not make it possible. Your system should also have the capabilities to receive packets wirelessly. Most of the Laptops, these days, have this inbuilt feature. In case of Desktop Computers and network printers, you would require to purchase a separate wireless adapter.

Is it possible to connect more than one computer at my location?

Yes, you can connect to multiple connections. To make this happen, you may be required to purchase either a switch/hub or wireless router.

What is a site survey?

Site survey is done to determine the possibilities and challenges in providing services to a particular site.

Is it possible to determine if we can get service before requesting for a site survey?

Not really. This is not possible before determining the feasibility and challenges of providing services to a particular site.

The antenna installed on your roof top receives signal from the tower we use. This is called Line of Site (LOS). The visual LOS is not enough to receive services. It is the Radio’s LOS, which has to be clear enough to receive uninterrupted services.
The clarity of Radio’s LOS are often diluted because of  noise from a neighbors wireless systems, baby monitors, phones, etc; wireless signals reflected by billboards, water towers, mobile homes, etc. These are problems a proper site survey will find.

When to get the site survey done? Do I have to order services for site survey? 

Site survey is the first step we do once we receive your order for connection. You do not have to order for the site survey separately.

We've had a survey done already; do we need to have another site survey done?

You do not require another site survey done if you've had us done a survey within the last 6 months. You do not require paying for site survey in such case. However, we may conduct a charge free survey just to ensure nothing has changed in the Radio environment. If it's been longer than 6 months you should expect to pay the survey charge.
NOTE: It is mandatory to do survey if the survey has conducted by a third party. We do not accept the report on site survey conducted by third party.

What does "best effort" mean?

"Best effort" is the service level that most ISP's provide to residential and some business accounts. It means that you get up to the bandwidth level you pay for as long as the network is not congested and there isn't any data traversing the network at a higher priority.
In the event that there is higher priority traffic traversing the network, "best effort" traffic is made to wait until that traffic is transmitted. It's kind of like pulling over to let an emergency vehicle pass.

The monthly service fee is payable in full & advance with the state and federal taxes.
